10 things we (think we) know about the new Conan movie

1. The film is not based on the never-made Conan the Destroyer sequel known as King Conan: Crown of Iron. The new film is said to be unrelated to the earlier Arnold Schwarzenegger series.2. Numerous directors have been attached to the project. The Wachowskis, John Milius, and Robert Rodriguez were all attached at one point. In 2008, Rodriguez announced that he would be producing (no longer true), and The Hollywood Reporter announced Brett Ratner would be directing (also false). Director Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th remake, Pathfinder) was officially announced in 2009.3. The film is aiming for an R-rating and is intended to be closer to the source material than earlier adaptations, according to Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, who were hired to rewrite the original script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Sean Hood has contributed rewrites to Blackman’s and McCain’s script.4. Conan is being played by Jason Momoa, who played the alien Ronon Dex on Sci Fi Channel’s original series Stargate Atlantis. He was also a cast-member on the season-long soap opera North Shore.5. Rose McGowan will be appearing as an evil half-witch (whatever that means) while Ron Perlman will be playing Conan’s father, the blacksmith Corin.6. The plot revolves around Conan taking revenge on the warlord, Khalar Zym, who massacred his village and murdered his father. Lym is played by Stephen Lang, who 2009 audiences will remember as Col. Miles Quaritch, the villain of Avatar.7. Filming started on March 15, 2010 in the Southern European country of Bulgaria.8. The film was originally titled Conan 3D. While the film will still be in 3D, it has been retitled to simply Conan the Barbarian, most likely to associate it with the 1982 original film.9. There will be a sequence depicting Conan’s youth at the beginning of the film. In these scenes, Conan will be played by Leo Howard, who played the young Snake Eyes in 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.10. The thirteen original Conan stories by creator Robert E. Howard are available in a collection called The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, available from Del Rey.
