Action Movie Clichés: Why The Good Guy Wears White

The movies often lean on tried and true formulas which audiences are familiar with. One of these comes from westerns and involves the color of a character’s hat. The good guys wear white ten-gallon hats and the baddies wear black. Famous examples include the Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers.

Part of this was for practical reasons. Black and white film presents movie makers with limitations, and a simple method had to be found to tell two sides apart when they were not wearing uniforms. This is the reason that a road team still wears white in most professional sports
